How high would a tsunami have to be to knock over new york skyscrapers?
Hundred foot waves would do considerable damage to New York. I have just been watching a pgm on TV about tsunamis – they are apparently quite common. The main area for tsunamis is called the Pacific Rim, which of course does not include New York. However, there is one big serious problem and that is the Canary Islands, one of which is likely to sink rapidly into the sea any time without warning. If the above happens or even if only half of one of these islands sinks rapidly below the waves, the power output will be massive and would produce waves 1,000 feet high by the time they reached the Eastern Seaboard of the USA [NYC etc]. There is no warning of an approaching tsunami and they can travel at 400 mph – that’s not far short of the speed of a jet liner crossing the Pond. This is not going to happen right now, but it probably will happen say within the next century or so. No one knows for sure. Like I say, there’s no warning. The last recorded tsunami here in UK happened during the re
