How high can a fence / trellis / railings / wall be before it needs planning permission?
Generally permission is not required for a wall , fence, gate or other means of enclosure less than 1 metre high alongside a highway used by vehicles and 2 metres high elsewhere; you should also check the property deeds since covenants may also limit the type and height of any enclosure. Please see the Planning Portal web site for general information. http://www.planningportal.gov.uk If you want to be certain that your proposal does not require planning permission you can apply for a certificate called a “Lawful Development Certificate” (LDC). It is not compulsory to have an LDC but there may be times when you need one to confirm that the use, operation or activity named in it, is lawful for planning control purposes.
