How have shoes evolved as standalone accessories over the years?
It was the fashion magazines of the 1980s, such as Vogue, that were responsible for the change — they started paying a lot of attention to shoes. Till then, shoes were made to match an outfit, but this soon changed. And as the wind blew, the trend caught fire and shoe designing became quite important. I was lucky enough to be part of the trend. As I was in London and part of the city’s fashion scene, a lot of established designers such as John Rocha and others used shoes designed by me for their runway shows. In 1988, Kate Fellin, the then assistant editor of Vogue magazine, featured an eight-page spread on my shoes and design. For me, that was a big break. More publicity followed.
