How have Jewish groups responded to Black Book?
Paul Verhoeven: I think until now, very good. I showed a movie in the Jerusalem Jewish Film Festival, and I just heard it had a very positive review in the Jerusalem Post. Anyhow, when I was there, there was no animosity rising or the feeling that I was upsetting something which was clearly based on a historical reality. Carice van Houten is in nearly every scene of the movie. What did she bring to the table? Paul Verhoeven: Carice, I think, basically adds everything to the movie. Without Carice, I don’t know anybody in Holland, in fact, that could have done this. There is nobody. I mean, if Carice wouldn’t have lived, I shouldn’t have made the movie because she brings – well you’re probably aware to a certain degree – but I am much more aware that she is completely central.
