How have advancements in medical technology led to infection?
A. The overuse of antibiotics has contributed to increasing numbers of drug resistant microorganisms in the U.S., and more patients today are immunocompromised (more susceptible to infection) as a result of cancer chemotherapy, organ transplantation, and HIV infection. Prevention of infection is the key. Our department is responsible for providing up-to-date information on how to protect our patients, healthcare workers and visitors from communicable diseases and the risk of infection. Infection Control duties include surveillance of facility acquired infections, education, advising on best practices, policy review and writing, and bring the latest guidelines and technologies to patient care. We also work closely with the San Diego County Health and Human Services and report diseases that might be spread in the outside community. Q. Patient safety is very important.
