Severe thunderstorms moved through the Bluegrass region Tuesday afternoon, dumping extremely heavy rain on already-saturated ground, causing areas of flash flooding. The slow-moving storms also produced high winds, numerous lightning strikes and small hail in some areas. The Stamping Ground Grocery Store in Scott County had part of its roof ripped off during the storm. No injuries were reported. In Lexington, there were several reports of localized flooding. At the height of the storm, police advised motorists to avoid Clays Mill Road from Wellington Way to Man O’ War Blvd. due to heavy flash flooding in the area. The storm system dumped up to seven inches of rain in and around Louisville in only an hour earlier in the day Tuesday, causing widespread flash flooding in that area, including the area in and surrounding Churchill Downs, where a large part of the track was under water.
