How has the Indian dance music scene developed in recent years?
There are a few parallel scenes evolving simultaneously. The most predominant one is being driven by the Indian film industry. Film songs are immensely popular and are played in clubs as remixes. Minor scenes for electronic music have always been prevalent in cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Calcutta, Hyderabad, Chennai, Goa, Pune and the home of house music in India—Bangalore. These scenes are now showing signs of becoming much more significant. Today, every club in India hosts at least one weekly house night. What are the challenges of being a female DJ in India? Initially I faced opposition from my family, who were concerned about my safety. This profession was also not really identified with women, and many of my peers thought it was a passing interest. Being taken seriously by other DJs was an added challenge, but luckily I had a few helpful colleagues along the way who supported what I wanted to do.
