How has the algae affected wildlife?
Algae affects wildlife as it causes a blanket across the top of the lake which blocks out sunlight for other plants to use to grow. Therefore plants below the surface of the water die and fish that feed on them have less food to eat. Sadly, the rare fish species Vendace has died out in its natural habitat, Bassenthwaite Lake, in part due to the excess of phosphates in the lake. When fish die this also affects mammals further up the food chain that live off them too.
