How has the AIDS epidemic changed in New York State?
The following information provides a long term perspective on the AIDS epidemic from the time it was identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 1983 through 1996. All information is based on the number of reported AIDS cases . Newly Diagnosed AIDS Cases – Quantity In New York City the overall trend in the number of newly diagnosed AIDS cases increased rapidly from 1983 to mid-1993. From mid-1993 through mid-1995, the number of newly diagnosed AIDS cases did not increase or decrease, but remained stable. From mid- 1995 through mid- 1996, the number of newly diagnosed AIDS cases decreased slightly. (New cases of HIV infection continued to occur during this time, but HIV infections are not currently reported to the NYS Department of Health.) The overall trend in the number of newly diagnosed AIDS cases in the rest of New York State was similar to that of New York City.
