How has singing impacted my ability to get jobs on bass?

Singing is something that I’ve always done. Early in my career I am sure that the ability to sing got me in to more than one good band of older more experienced players. I learned a lot from these guys I played with and I am thankful for all the wonderful musicians I’ve worked with over the years. Nowadays I do quite a bit of freelance work. This can be any number of different situations. It usually goes something like this. The band gives me a song list and sometimes a cd of the material. I learn the songs by ear playing along and making notes on stuff I don’t know very well. Occasionally we have a practice or two. Then I go fill in. Sometimes I get hired because a band has a couple of singers and one is unavailable. If I’m lucky I’ll know some of the songs the guy I’m filling in for usually sings. I might have to learn a couple vocals. There are usually a few songs on the list that I know. In addition to this I sing a few songs that most musicians around here are familiar with. In on
