How has jazz progressed in Vietnam and what is the state of it now?
Jazz is still yong in Vietnam, but a lot of young musicians are learning it. Right now the conservatory only teachers jazz for saxophone and piano. But for my band I’ve found books on jazz for drums, bass and other instruments, and the musicians get practice every night. Every Sunday afternoon at the club I organize a discussion with students and other jazz fans about jazz theory and how to play jazz with a band, and Carlsberg sponsors the event. I need young people to understand jazz, so any one who loves jazz or wants to understand it better can come. For my students the club is like a classroom and we practice and play with the West. Sometimes I feel the club is a big university for everybody who wants to come learn about music. Now after fives months, there’s a very warm atmosphere for everybody who comes to the club, and some nights there’s a very good soul in there.
