How has e-ticketing done in India so far?
Being a recent phenomenon in the country, there has been limited success for e-ticketing. The good news is that all the new air carriers have started out with 100% e-ticketing policy. Be it Kingfisher, Air Deccan or SpiceJet, the norm is e-ticketing. With photo identity cards mandatory for e-tickets, they more secure than regular paper tickets misuse is commonplace in the latter. E-tickets are now taking off with big carriers like Indian Airlines, Air Sahara and Jet Airways as well. These carriers comprise almost 85% of tickets sold. In particular, Jet Airways has given a major impetus to this concept and are running a pilot on e-tickets. Indian Railways have shown remarkable success in the concept of online bookings; they are frontrunners and a role model for a lot of people to look at. Being a monopoly, its much easier for them to go e-ticketing as they do not operate through agents. Compare this to the airline sector where almost 2,500 travel agents sell 97% of tickets online or off
