How has DNA fingerprinting established paternity or maternity?

0

DNA Fingerprinting is a method of identification that compares fragments of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). It is sometimes called DNA typing. DNA is the genetic material found within the cell nuclei of all living things. In mammals the strands of DNA are grouped into structures called chromosomes. With the exception of identical twins, the complete DNA of each individual is unique. However, we inherit our genetic material from our parents (50% for the mother, 50% from the father), therefore, by comparing our DNA to that of our parents, it can be determined whether there is a 50% similarities between the 2 samples. The chances of that happening by chance are almost 0, therefore this test proves ones’ paternity/maternity.
