How has Americas attitude toward marriage changed since the 1950s?
Well the attitude toward marriage did change. People used to “have to” get married if a girl got pregnant. These days single parent families are more socially acceptable. Women were taught in high school to be housewives, the were only offered classes like cooking and sewing, they were only encouraged to get married and have kids, they were not encouraged to learn a skill or go to college. These days women have to work in order to support the family, it is not a choice. They have to know a skill or vocation or have a college education. In the 1950’s divorce was taboo, so if you were in an abusive marriage, you just had to tough it out. More people were married then, but it is not to say that many people were happily married. These days if someone is in an abusive it is acceptable to get a divorce. I also think since so many of us girls saw our mothers in such unhappy marriages, we put off getting married until we were older, or opted not to get married at all.
