How has American culture glamorized the mafia / gangster lifestyle as if to the point of absurd hyperbole?

I don’t know. I don’t find gangs glamorous in any way. I’ve seen quite a few movies and I don’t know that I can say that gangs are in any way promoted or glamorized in them. Some people apparently do find them glamorous though, or we wouldn’t have them. I think the reason most join is a need to feel like they belong and are appreciated. They receive unfortunate positive reinforcement. I think the mafia is rather glamorized, though. I wonder if this is just because it has been around longer and is “established” or because it is run and peopled mostly by adults and so seems more “harmless” because its muscle isn’t prone to fits of hormonal rage and teen-aged angst. How’s that for answering a question with a question?
