How hard is it to display good Christian character in sports?
Colleen: I think it’s hard. When you get bad calls from the refs or something doesn’t go your way during the course of a game, how you respond is a true test of your character. Are you going to handle the problem as a Christian should and be a good testimony, or are you going to let your flesh get the better of you? Autumn: In cross-country, there is a lot of opportunity to encourage. If you run by someone or someone runs by you, you can tell them, “Good job, keep going.” Nick: We play some teams that do a lot of trash talking, and most of those guys don’t expect you to just keep your mouth shut or help them up after you knock them down. They expect that when they’re down, you don’t help them. Nate: In basketball, if a guy makes an amazing shot after I’ve been right up in his face defending him, running down the court, and I say, “Nice shot,” the guy will look at me with a weird expression.
