How good is the public transportation system?

The rail system in Japan is regarded as one of the best, if not the best, in the world. Trains are on time, and you can “set your watch” to a train if you want to. So there are no worries about late trains messing up your plans. Because much of Japan is mountains, of course trains cannot go to many of the resorts, but on the whole the system does service the winter sports resorts regions extremely well.
