How good are the roads?
If you want to get to a resort quick, the best way is to use the Expressways – however, these are toll roads and not cheap. At the end of a busy peak weekend the return journey to cities from resort areas can take double what you expect due to congestion. The national routes cover all of Japan and many resort areas. They are free to use, but are usually one-lane roads going through towns and villages and have countless traffic lights slowing down the journey.
