How feasible is the idea of carrying out a counter-attack on phishing sites?
It is technically feasible but is not advisable. There was a US company that followed such a strategy and had the requisite technology available. It went out of business. When the phishers attacked, they counter-attacked. The problem was they got sued by the guys whose computers they attacked. In the US even if a criminal breaks into your house you can’t shoot him. You have to report it. The same story applies with reference to the phishing guys. But mutually assured destruction is not a good strategy. (Laughs) Most of the guys involved in phishing don’t use their own machine, so by the time you attack them they have already moved. We did a study and found that the guys who steal credit card numbers don’t use them but sell it to someone else—which means there is an existing black market which is fueling the demand.
