How fast is joining a thread to a partition?

Each thread_entry (the control block Neutrino maintains for each thread) has a pointer to its containing partition. Joining a thread means only changing that pointer. The join itself is very fast. Most of the time is spent simply entering the kernel so we can swap the pointer.
