How far is the Western World more of a dystopia than a utopia?

First, I would suggest that the idea of the “Western World” or Western Civilization is a misleading concept. The only link between the classical civilizations and the modern world comes through the European renaissance which is directly attributable to the Islamic civilization that was itself in contact with the Eastern civilizations. The Protestant Reformation, the industrial revolution, the age of reason and the early development of modern science and technology are solely the result of the applications of and refinements to Muslim scholarship up into the 19th Century. However the explosion in science and technology from the mid-19th century to present day is another matter. If we call that the “Modern Civilization”, it makes more sense because its political and economic ideas flourish anywhere in the world where traditional ideas are superseded by scientific materialism. Its just as strong in Japan and China as it is in France or the United States. So, I would rephrase your question
