How far is the Andromeda galaxy from us?

Even more amazing, it seems to be visible to the naked eye in a sky that isn’t even pitch black. According to Wikipedia, tho’, “such a sky is available only in smaller towns and isolated areas reasonably far from population centers and sources of light pollution. It appears quite small without a telescope because only the central part is bright enough to be visible, but the full angular diameter of the galaxy is seven times that of the full moon.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andromeda_Galaxy Absolutely gorgeous pix at the main link. I’m continually floored at some of the incredible vistas that space photography is feeding us nowadays. The colors remind me a bit of an aurora in an odd way, I guess cos they give the appearance of being in motion, even in still photos. Okay, so sue me. I have a vivid imagination.
