It takes about an hour to get to the house from the international airport – the same as Copacabana. The airport is now named after Antonio Carlos Joabim, one of the famed writers of “The Girl from Ipanema” and introducer of the Bossa Nova to the World. The airport letter code, GIG, comes from the old name, Galeo Internacional which is still used by some people and in some tour books. The other airport in Rio, Santos-Dumont (SDU), is used almost exclusively for flying within Brazil.
