How far is alaska from russiA at there closest point?

The water between Alaska and Russia is called the Bering Strait. In the strait there are two islands, Big Diomede and Little Diomede. Little Diomede belongs to the US and Big Diomede belongs to Russia. They are about 2 miles apart, so you can see one from the other. But both are small, featureless, uninhabited islands. So you -can- see Russia from the US but just barely, and there’s really not much to see. So even if Sarah Palin had traveled to the Diomede Islands (which I seriously doubt), and had looked across the water to the Russian island, that wouldn’t make her an expert in foreign policy.
