How far do piles go down? Are they extendable?

A. Steel screw piles go down until they reach the good hard layer. This might be 6 metres down or as much as 20 metres down. Extensions are welded on until the required depth is reached. The pile can be cut off above ground to the required length using an oxyacetylene torch.
