How far away from Earth is the moon?
The moon is actually moving away from the Earth by approximately 1.5 – 2 inches per year. The last Apollo mission left a reflective mirror on the surface of the Moon and they point a laser at it each day. They measure how long it takes for the reflection to get back to the Earth and calculate the increasing distance based upon the speed of light, which is a constant.
