How far apart should peonies be planted?

Peonies look great as specimen plants as well as in groups. Typically I plant peonies on 1-meter (3 foot) centres. I would not plant peonies much closer than 75 cm (30 inches) centre to centre. This minimum spacing ensures some air circulation and not too much root competition. Some varieties however grow quite wide ex. ‘Postillion’, ‘White Innocence’ and a wider spacing would be advisable. I generally would not plant tree peonies any closer than 1 meter centre to centre.
