How expensive is it to have koi fish?
I know koi are beautiful and because of that, many people want them but koi are NOT for everyone. To make a long story short, koi aren’t cheap. Koi must live in a space that allows for them to have AT LEAST 10 gallons per inch of fish so to house one 10″ koi, ideally you should have 100 gallons of water for it to swim. You may think that this isn’t a problem and buy a tank to put it in because the koi you buy may be tiny. I assure you, they DO grow. It’s just a matter of time. If you keep a koi in a tank and it out grows the tank, you NEED a place to put it (ideally a pond). To keep your water clean and clear, you need a filtration system. Koi ponds can be built from cement, premolded liners, or rubber sheets all costing different amounts. I suggest that people purchase a pump that circulates the entire pond volume in an hour (ie: a 2000 gallon pond should have a filtration system powerful enough to pump out 2000 gallons of water per hour or more).
