How exactly were African Americans denied their civil rights?
Check your history books. Many African Americans were denied the right to vote, hold office, have the same level of care, etc. as Caucasian Americans for many years. Look up ‘civil rights movement’ on Google and I imagine you will find dozens if not hundreds of articles outlining the reasons behind the Civil Rights movement of the 1960’s.
