How exactly did Hitler go to prison and how did he come to power?
Hitler was arrested for his part in an attempted coup on the German Government – the Beer Hall Putsch. As it failed, he was arrested and jailed in 1923 for high treason. He was released in 1924. Hitler got himself elected as Chancellor of Germany in 1933. After that, he created a national emergency by setting fire to the Reichstag and blaming it on the Communists. Hitler used this opportunity to get President Hindenburg to issue the Reichstag Fire Decree, suspending personal and civil liberties. In light of the ‘Communist revolution’ the Nazi Party had blamed the Reichstag fire on, Hitler was able to prohibit other parties from forming, effectively allowing Germany to become a one-party state.
