How effective is the measles vaccine?
The MMR vaccine is the best and only known way to prevent measles. The MMR vaccine was introduced in India under the Universal Immunisation Programme (UIP) in 1985. Since then the number of cases have dropped significantly and there are longer intervals between outbreaks. Also, since the introduction of the MMR vaccine, deaths from measles have fallen by 60 per cent all over the world. However, children still get measles in India. Outbreaks are more common in winter and early spring (between January and April). Sometimes children get measles even after they’ve got the single dose vaccine. So, your child may be vulnerable if he hasn’t received the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. Experts believe that vaccination can effectively control the disease and reduce measles-related deaths by 80 per cent if the government can extend vaccination coverage to 90 per cent of the country.
