How Effective Are Mood Stabilizers?
Bipolar disorder is treatable, and with treatment people can often achieve significant stabilization of their mood. Bipolar disorder is frequently treated with lithium, a mood stabilizer, valproic acid, an anticonvulsant which has mood stabilizing properties or an antipsychotic such as olanzapine or quetiapine. It usually takes two to three weeks for the medication to be effective at controlling symptoms.
