How effective are inhaled corticosteroids in the treatment of COPD?
Currently, none of the inhaled corticosteroids are approved by the FDA for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). While inhaled corticosteroids may have a small effect on slowing the loss of lung function, they do not reduce the overall mortality in patients with COPD. In addition, there are mixed results on whether treatment with inhaled corticosteroids reduces COPD exacerbations. Overall, the reduction may be about 30%.
