How effective are antibiotics in treating BRD?
An antibiotic can be very effective at treating BRD, if: • It is the right antibiotic for the bacteria involved with the infection. • Not all bacteria are susceptible to all antibiotics. • It is given by the proper dose and route of administration. • Following the label directions is very important. • It has been properly stored so it does not lose potency. • Some antibiotics need to be kept cool when not in use. • It has been given soon enough. This last point is critical because BRD bacteria double in number every 30 minutes. The image below shows what can happen. When overwhelming populations of bacteria take over the lungs, recovery will be a challenge even with the most appropriate antibiotic treatment.
