Really there’s no such thing as “barren” land. Land always contains life of some variety. Sometimes a little bit, other places life nearly beyond count. It also entirely depends on where you are trying to make agricultural land. I live in Idaho, in the heartland of some of the world’s most fertile potato growing land there is. This is the land of sagebrush and prickly pear cactus….and lava rock. To break a new piece of land out of sagebrush and cactus would be a monumental task. You’d be picking lava rock out of your potato field for the next 30-40 years every time you plowed. That is NO joke….30-40 years of picking rocks. The first couple of years you would be moving rocks the size of small cars. Then the rocks would be the size of toddlers, for 5-8 years. Finally for the other 30+ years you would be finding rocks the size of dinner plates, and large potatoes. Of course to break new land out here in the desert, you’d have to own water rights. You cannot just dig a well, and start
