How Does WNV Spread?
Infected mosquitoes: WNV is generally spread by the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes become carriers of the WNV when they have fed on infected birds. In turn, mosquitoes then infect humans and other animals with WNV. Transfusions, transplants, and mother to child: In a very small number of cases WNV has been spread through blood transfusions, organ transplants, or mother to baby prior to delivery and during breastfeeding. Not through touching: WNV is not spread through casual contact such as touching or kissing an infected person. How soon do infected people get sick? People typically will develop symptoms between 3–4 days after an infected mosquito has bitten them. How Is WNV Infection Treated? There is no specific treatment for WNV infection. In cases with mild symptoms, people experience fever and mild aches that often pass on their own.
