I have to say, that’s one of the easiest English questions I’ve ever seen asked. If you’re confused about it, then you either haven’t read the opening scenes, or you don’t really understand what foreshadowing is. Foreshadowing is when there are hints in the story about what will happen later. The author is leaving clues about what is going to happen. For example, if a story keeps telling you that there is a loaded gun hanging on the wall, that’s a clue that the gun is going to get fired. Or if a woman always wears her hair so that it looks like a rope hanging around her neck, that’s foreshadowing that she is going to be hanged. A lot of the time, you only notice foreshadowing when you read a book the second time. You only notice the clues when you know what’s going to happen anyway. So, here’s the opening of ‘The War of the Worlds’.
