How does WCPSS determine when to build multi-story schools?

Wake County builds multi-story schools where appropriate. In Phase III, two-story Baileywick and Jeffreys Grove Elementary schools, two-story Wakefield Middle and Southeast Raleigh High and three-story Green Hope and Wakefield High schools were built. Due to the tremendous growth in Wake County, the school system is developing plans for other multi-story sites as well. Currently, there are 38 two-story schools and 10 three-story schools. There are, however, some restrictions. National and state building codes require all kindergarten and first-grade students be housed on the ground floor and have direct exits to the outdoors from all spaces that they use; including classrooms, media centers and cafeterias. Due to these restrictions, most elementary schools are one-story buildings. Click here to obtain additional information and a listing of multi-story schools.
