How does water cure hiccups?

I know of only one cure that has worked on everyone I’ve tried it on: it’s drinking water from the wrong side of a glass (the side away from your mouth). Not a joke, you have to bend way forward like you’re going to touch your toes until you can bend over the back of the glass and take a few swallows. Hiccups always stop for me and anyone else who I can get to actually try it. A lot of people refuse to try it, though. My wife said for years that it was “all in my mind” until I finally convinced her to try it during a very recalcitrant spell of hiccups. It was the only thing that worked for her, and continues to work for her. She finally admitted that I was right and maybe it wasn’t just “all in my head.” Drinking water normal or pluggig my nose while drinking or holding my breath doesn’t work, or only works sporadically.
