How does watchful waiting differ from active surveillance?
The goal of watchful waiting is to limit morbidity from the disease and therapy, not to administer curative treatment. For patients choosing active surveillance, curative therapy is delayed until the natural history and threat posed by the cancer can be more accurately assessed. Patients receive frequent, detailed evaluations for as long as they are healthy and young enough for definitive therapy.
