How does vitamin C aid in diet for anaemia? What foods have high vitamin C content?

Vitamin C helps the body absorb iron. Good dietary sources of vitamin C are vegetables and fruits, especially citrus fruits such as oranges and grapefruits, kiwi fruit, mangoes, apricots, strawberries and watermelons. Vegetables rich in vitamin C are broccoli, capsicum, tomatoes, cabbage, potatoes, radish greens, fenugreek and spinach. Amla is the richest source of vitamin C. I have only recently been diagnosed as anaemic. Even though I’ve always maintained a balanced diet, how does one get anaemia? It is possible that you are not absorbing iron from food. Check with your doctor for thalassaemia. Other possible causes of anaemia are intestinal parasites, lack of vitamin B12, folic acid in the diet, infections or excessive menstruation and genetic diseases such as leukaemia. Emotional strain, anxiety and worry could also lead to anaemia, so stay happy and stress-free. Next week, Dr Mukerjee will discuss nutrition for children.
