How does value-added work?
“Value-added” methods seek to identify the portion of each student’s growth in learning that can be attributed to the teacher. Value-added models focus on student growth, rather than how well or poorly a student has performed. The value-added score uses the difference between each student’s expected growth and the student’s actual growth for all students taught by a given teacher. The student’s expected growth is determined by examining the actual growth for all students with similar profiles. This assures that no teachers will be disadvantaged based on the profile of their students.
