How does value-added impact the performance index?
Value-added results do not affect the performance index. They are measured independently. Confusion about this relationship stems from a measure called the ‘growth calculation’. This measure applies only to schools that are in academic watch or emergency and do not serve students in grades 4-8. For example, the ‘growth calculation’ applies most often to K-3 and high schools in academic emergency or academic watch. For these schools, the ‘growth calculation’ is used because no value-added information is available. The ‘growth calculation’ represents a positive change in the performance index and can positively impact school ratings.
