How does topology discovery work to communicate a new nodes presence to all the other nodes on an RPR?

As with any layer 2 switch, each node maintains a forwarding database table containing all the existing nodes on the ring with their distance, in hops, and shortest path direction. A topology discovery mechanism is used to populate the database when a new node is added to or removed from the RPR.
