How does this study contribute to the growing evidence of ozone and its multiple applications in dentistry?
Eugenia Bezirtzoglou: Many studies confirm the importance of ozone as therapeutic agent in dentistry. Ozonated water has been found to act upon accelerating healing of the oral mucosa following tooth extraction or surgical interventions. Moreover, ozone was used in dental unit waterlines and in denture cleaning solutions. Recently, ozone was proposed for the management of primary dental root caries. Our study showed that the sanitation of toothbrushes by soaking them in large volumes of ozonated water had a sterilizing effect even with lower ozone concentrations. Usually, soaking in ozonated water requires several hours and even considering the half-life of ozone in water, there could still be some ozone remaining even after 8 h. Therefore, the fact that we achieved an excellent result only after 30 min by using a very low ozone concentration could hypothetize that a future study assessing the ability of much greater ozone concentrations in water should sterilize toothbrushes efficient
