How does this new state law affect schools and how does it relate to integrated pest management (IPM)?
State law now requires application of pesticides to public school grounds be carried out by an individual certified in the proper category by DATCP. The law also requires the treated area to be posted for 72 hours following the application. These requirements pertain to pesticide use on school grounds. School integrated pest management (IPM) is not addressed by Wisconsin law. IPM is a voluntary program promoted by DATCP and UW Extension, dealing with pests in a more progressive manner than simply applying pesticides. IPM is a methodical approach to pest management that uses common practices in a systematic fashion to deal with pest problems. IPM goals are to operate the school in ways that do not create an invitation to pests and to get rid of pests using tools that minimize risks to human health and the environment.
