How does this differ from what was taught previous to the November 9th decision by the Board of Education? What exactly is MCPS teaching about sexual variations?
A. The revised curriculum differs from the previous curriculum in that teachers now will define certain terms related to sexual variations and they will have uniform and consistent information to respond to student questions about sexual orientation. The revised curriculum defines terms such as gender identity, gender role, and sexual orientation and focuses on dispelling stereotypes and misconceptions on sexual orientation in an effort to diminish discrimination. Only the six schools participating in the field-test will have teachers trained on the use of the curriculum prior to teaching information about sexual variations. Teachers will be directed to use only the instructional resources and curriculum that was approved by the Board of Education.
