How does the Volt work?
The Volt is basically a plug-in battery electric vehicle (BEV) with a 40 mile range, but with the addition of an internal combustion engine (ICE) that drives an electric generator to extend the range when necessary. The ICE runs on either gasoline or E85 ethanol. Unlike current hybrids, the ICE is not connected to the wheels, but rather just provides electricity to power the electric motor. This type of design is called a “series hybrid”.
