How does the VoiceOver navigation system work?
When you install the shuffle for the first time, iTunes automatically downloads and installs extra software called VoiceOver Kit. On Leopard, iTunes uses the built-in Alex voice to speak everything on your shuffle—artists, song titles, and playlist names. On pre-Leopard systems and various versions of Windows, VoiceOver Kit uses its own text-to-speech engine to generate those sounds.
