How does the visual system function?
The process begins by light encountering the front of the eye called the cornea. Light is then focused by the front surface (cornea) and subsequently by the human lens (inside the eye) so that it comes to the focus on the inner lining of the back of the eye called the retina. The retina is a very thin, fragile tissue which converts light energy into a chemical message. The chemical message is then converted into an electrical signal which is sent by way of the optic nerve to the brain. The patient actually ‘Sees’ with their brain, not with the eye itself.
